(TJV NEWS) Israel is preparing for a large-scale ground invasion of southern Lebanon aimed at dismantling the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and pushing its forces away from Israel’s northern border, according to a report by The Times of Israel.

The planned operation would represent one of Israel’s largest military offensives in Lebanon in years and could dramatically escalate the already widening regional war involving Israel, Iran and allied militant groups.

According to the Times of Israel, Israeli officials are discussing a “massive” ground offensive designed to seize territory in southern Lebanon and destroy Hezbollah’s military infrastructure embedded in villages and towns near the Israeli border. The goal of the campaign would be to push Hezbollah forces farther north and eliminate rocket launch sites, weapons depots and command centers used to attack Israel.

Offensive could target territory south of the Litani River

Israeli officials cited in the Times of Israel report said the military is considering an operation that would involve taking control of areas south of the Litani River — a strategic line roughly 20 miles north of the Israeli border.

Such a move would effectively create a buffer zone designed to keep Hezbollah fighters and missile units farther from Israeli communities in the Galilee region. The Times of Israel reported that the operation could resemble Israel’s previous military campaign in Gaza, with the objective of systematically dismantling militant infrastructure in populated areas.

According to the report, Israeli leaders believe Hezbollah has built an extensive military network across southern Lebanon, including fortified positions, weapons storage facilities and command centers embedded within civilian areas.

Rocket barrage helped trigger escalation

The potential invasion follows a large Hezbollah rocket assault on Israel earlier this week, which Israeli officials said included hundreds of rockets fired toward Israeli territory in coordination with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Following that attack, Israeli officials reportedly concluded that diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict had failed and that a much larger military operation may now be necessary, the Times of Israel reported.

Israel has already been conducting heavy airstrikes across southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah fighters, infrastructure and weapons facilities. In recent days, Israeli ground troops have also carried out limited raids across the border aimed at locating and destroying militant positions.

According to the Times of Israel, Israeli forces said those raids have already resulted in dozens of Hezbollah fighters being killed and multiple weapons sites being destroyed.

Regional war continues to expand

The potential ground invasion comes amid a rapidly escalating regional conflict involving Israel, Iran and Tehran-aligned militant groups throughout the Middle East.

Hezbollah, which is heavily armed and funded by Iran, has been one of Israel’s most formidable adversaries for decades and maintains tens of thousands of rockets capable of striking deep into Israeli territory.

The group has gradually intensified its attacks since the broader regional war began earlier this year, including rocket launches, drone strikes and cross-border assaults targeting northern Israeli communities.

At the same time, Israeli forces have carried out extensive airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, including command centers and military facilities used to coordinate attacks on Israel.

Diplomatic efforts underway but uncertain

Despite the rising military tensions, diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict are continuing behind the scenes.

The Times of Israel reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tasked senior official Ron Dermer with handling diplomatic contacts related to the Lebanon front, including potential talks with Lebanese authorities.

However, with both sides continuing to exchange attacks and Israeli officials openly discussing a large-scale ground campaign, the prospects for a quick diplomatic solution remain uncertain.

Risk of a wider regional confrontation

A major Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon would carry significant geopolitical risks and could draw additional actors into the conflict.

Hezbollah is widely considered the most powerful militant group in the region and has fought previous wars with Israel, most notably during the 2006 Lebanon war.

Analysts warn that a full-scale ground campaign could trigger a prolonged conflict in Lebanon and potentially expand the war further across the Middle East.

For now, Israeli military planners appear to be weighing whether such a massive operation is necessary to neutralize Hezbollah’s growing military threat along Israel’s northern frontier — a decision that could shape the next phase of the region’s rapidly evolving war.

If Israel moves troops into Southern Lebanon, they must NEVER leave or Hezbollah will return. The Lebanese must leave and Israel must annex the land. At some point, Jews must be allowed to settle the land of Naphtali and Asher. There must be no compromise here.
