Terror at Temple Israel: Armed Attacker Identified as Lebanese-Born U.S. Citizen After Vehicle Ramming at Michigan Synagogue

By: Fern Sidman

Authorities have identified the man who rammed a vehicle into one of the largest Reform synagogues in the United States as a 41-year-old naturalized American citizen originally from Lebanon, in what federal investigators say appears to have been a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.

The suspect, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was fatally shot by security personnel after he drove his vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, a Detroit-area suburb with a large Jewish population, according to officials. The vehicle crashed through part of the building and subsequently caught fire, sending smoke billowing into the synagogue and prompting a massive emergency response.

Federal investigators, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have now taken the lead in examining the incident, which has shaken Jewish communities across the United States and sparked renewed discussion about security at religious institutions.

According to a report that appeared late on Thursday at VIN News, the attack occurred during a busy period at the synagogue, when staff members, teachers, and dozens of children were present inside the building’s early childhood center.

Miraculously, no children or staff were killed or seriously injured, though the attack left a security officer unconscious and dozens of responding officers suffering from smoke inhalation.

Temple Israel, located in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, is widely regarded as one of the largest Reform synagogues in the country, serving a vibrant congregation and hosting numerous educational and community programs.

On the day of the attack, the synagogue was particularly active. Approximately 140 children were present in the building’s early childhood learning center, along with more than 30 staff members, according to local officials. The tranquility of the day was shattered when Ghazali allegedly drove his vehicle into the building, smashing through part of a hallway and causing significant damage.

According to the information provided in the VIN News report, the vehicle continued into the structure before crashing and igniting, producing thick smoke that quickly filled parts of the building.

The dramatic sequence of events unfolded within moments. Security personnel stationed at the synagogue immediately responded to the threat.

West Bloomfield Police Chief Dale Young said the synagogue’s security team acted swiftly once the vehicle breach occurred. “Temple security officers engaged the individual and neutralized the threat,” Young told reporters.

Authorities said Ghazali was shot by security personnel during the confrontation and was later found dead inside the vehicle. Investigators believe the rapid response by trained security staff prevented what could have been a far more catastrophic outcome.

According to the VIN News report, Jewish institutions across the United States have increasingly invested in professional security teams and emergency preparedness following several high-profile attacks in recent years. The Temple Israel incident appears to underscore the importance of those precautions.

Fox News reported that Ghazali was a resident of Dearborn Heights. Mo Baydoun, the mayor of Dearborn Heights said that Ghazali targeted the Jewish community after suffering family losses in Lebanon during the country’s conflict with Israel.

In a statement on social media Baydoun said, “Earlier today, we learned that the individual responsible for the incident that took place at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield was a resident of Dearborn Heights. He died at the scene,” as was reported by Fox News.

He added: “Earlier this month, he lost several members of his own family, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon.” Baydoun further condemned the attack and urged residents to stay aware and vigilant, “especially as we gather during these sacred final days of Ramadan.”

According to information cited by Fox News Digital, multiple law enforcement officials and federal authorities revealed that the suspect originally entered the United States approximately fifteen years ago as the spouse of an American citizen during the Obama administration. Authorities indicated that he later obtained full U.S. citizenship in 2016 after completing the naturalization process.

Federal records reviewed by investigators show that Ghazali was born in Lebanon on January 4, 1985 and arrived in the United States through Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on May 10, 2011. As reported by Fox News Digital, he was admitted under an IR1 immigrant visa, a category typically issued to foreign nationals who have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least two years at the time their visa is approved or at the time they enter the country.

Documentation from the Department of Homeland Security indicates that Ghazali’s marital relationship dated back at least to May 2009. Prior to his entry into the United States, his spouse had initiated the immigration process by filing two separate petitions in December 2009 — a fiancé visa petition and a petition for an alien relative. Authorities described this approach as a dual-filing strategy, often used to expedite immigration proceedings. Both petitions were approved by federal immigration authorities in April 2010.

Following several years of residence in the United States, Ghazali formally applied for naturalization on October 20, 2015, and was subsequently granted American citizenship on February 5, 2016, according to federal immigration records referenced in the Fox News Digital report.

Additional details cited by Fox News Digital and local reporting from The Detroit News indicate that Ghazali was employed in Dearborn Heights, a city within the Detroit metropolitan area that has one of the largest Arab American populations in the United States.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that while investigators believe they have accurately identified the individual involved, the information remains preliminary as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Thursday’s incident. Officials cautioned that the ongoing investigation may yield additional details about the suspect’s background, immigration history, and possible motivations.

Emergency responders at the scene also discovered what appeared to be a large quantity of explosives in the back of Ghazali’s truck, law enforcement officials told CNN.

The FBI said it was leading the investigation of what special agent Jennifer Runyan described as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” At a news conference on Thursday, Runyan said, “This was a deeply disturbing and tragic event.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was monitoring the situation and coordinating with state authorities. “We are working with Michigan State Police to get more information. This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am hoping for everyone’s safety,” she added.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel also condemned the attack. “Antisemitism has no place in Michigan and cannot be tolerated,” Nessel said in a statement. “In moments like these, it’s more important than ever that we come together, stand with our neighbors, confront hate whenever it appears, and build stronger communities.”

President Donald Trump said he had been fully briefed on the incident and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community.  “I want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all of the people in the Detroit area following the attack on the Jewish synagogue earlier today,” Trump said while speaking at a Women’s History Month event at the White House. “I’ve been briefed, fully briefed, and it’s a terrible thing, but it goes on. We’re going to be right down to the bottom of it. It’s absolutely incredible that things like this happen,” he added.

The VIN News report indicated that the FBI has assembled a multi-agency task force to analyze evidence and conduct interviews related to the attack.

Moments after the crash and gunfire, emergency services rushed to the scene. Firefighters battled flames from the suspect’s vehicle while police officers secured the synagogue and ensured that those inside were safe.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the immediate aftermath of the attack was chaotic. Smoke quickly spread through the building, creating hazardous conditions. A security officer struck by the vehicle was knocked unconscious, though officials said the injuries were not life-threatening. Additionally, 30 law-enforcement officers required treatment for smoke inhalation after responding to the blaze inside the building.

Despite the confusion and danger, authorities say the coordinated response prevented casualties among those inside the synagogue. Temple Israel staff members played a crucial role in protecting the children present during the attack.

Cassi Cohen, director of strategic development at the synagogue, described the terrifying moment when the vehicle crashed into the building. She was standing in the hallway near the point of impact. “When I heard the crash, I knew it was bad,” Cohen said. She immediately gathered several staff members and retreated to a secure office. “We grabbed people and locked the door,” she explained.

According to the VIN News report, the synagogue has conducted multiple active-shooter drills in recent years, preparing staff members to respond quickly to emergencies. Those preparations proved vital. “Thankfully, we have had many active shooter drills and our staff is prepared for these situations,” Cohen said. “We do go into lockdown.”

Perhaps the most chilling aspect of the incident is how close the attack came to reaching a classroom. Cohen noted that a classroom was located very near the hallway where the vehicle crashed. At the time, more than 140 children were inside the building.

Thanks to the swift response of teachers and staff, the children were quickly moved to secure areas and later reunited safely with their parents. VIN News reported that parents rushed to the synagogue as soon as they heard about the attack, anxiously awaiting confirmation that their children were safe. Authorities later confirmed that all children were accounted for.

Rabbi Arianna Gordon of Temple Israel expressed profound gratitude for the actions of security personnel, teachers, and emergency responders. Speaking after the incident, she praised those who acted quickly to protect the synagogue’s youngest members. “They are the true rock stars of the day,” Gordon said.

She specifically commended the security team, early childhood teachers, and law-enforcement officers who helped evacuate the children and ensure their safety. Their actions, she said, demonstrated remarkable courage under pressure.

While the suspect is deceased, investigators are continuing to examine the case. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing Ghazali’s digital activity, and interviewing individuals who may have known him.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said investigators are working carefully to determine the attacker’s motive. “What drove this person into action has to be determined by the investigation,” Bouchard said.  Officials are also exploring whether the suspect had any prior connections to extremist ideology or antisemitic organizations.

The Temple Israel attack comes amid heightened concern about antisemitic violence across the United States. Synagogues, Jewish schools, and community centers have increasingly adopted advanced security protocols, including armed guards, surveillance systems, and emergency response training.

Experts say the West Bloomfield attack illustrates why such measures have become necessary. Without the presence of trained security personnel, the incident could have resulted in a far greater tragedy.

In the hours after the attack, Temple Israel began the process of assessing the damage and supporting congregants shaken by the ordeal. Community members have expressed relief that no lives were lost, even as they grapple with the emotional aftermath. Synagogue leaders are coordinating with law enforcement and community organizations to ensure that worshippers feel safe returning to the building, as was reported by VIN News.

For many, the attack serves as both a warning and a testament to resilience. Despite the violence that erupted within its walls, Temple Israel remains a symbol of community strength. As investigations continue and repairs begin, the synagogue’s leaders have vowed that the attack will not break the spirit of the congregation. Instead, they say, it will reinforce their determination to protect their community.
